About the artist
Originally from County Durham, Stuart Mulligan has lived and worked in South Wales since 2002. He holds a BA honours degree in illustration, and is a member of the Federation of British Artists.
In his paintings he delivers complex messages with great simplicity, following in the spiritual footsteps of Turner, a painter much admired by Mulligan and a painter to whom he readily acknowledges a substantial debt. The artist’s portrayal of the Gower Peninsular are highly atmospheric and betray his fascination with dynamic cloud movements and the fleeting effects of light upon the land and water beneath.
Mulligan's assured brushwork provides an end result that can be interpreted on a number of levels. At first sight, his work has an abstract quality, the topographical accuracy of the landscape only becoming apparent on closer inspection. In the artist’s words, 'I paint simply and evocatively, leaving the viewer to decide what the paintings mean to them'.
